Our model places a primary focus on prevention. We would rather prevent a woman or child from being a victim than rescue that woman or child out of trafficking down the road. A rescue operation from the initial investigation through rehabilitation costs around $9,000 per mission, whereas preventing a woman or child from being victimized can cost as little as $40/month. Eventually, The 1 Collective would like to venture into partnerships with people who work to rescue and rebuild victims of human trafficking, however, currently all of our projects and funds are allocated towards methods of prevention specific to the communities and regions that we work in.

The 1 Collective is a nonprofit organization fighting to prevent human trafficking around the world.

Cambodia:

50 years ago the Khmer Rouge, a communist military regime, was responsible for the mass murders of 1.5 to 3 million Cambodians. The genocide targeted religious, political, and educated citizens (click to learn more). Today we continue to see the effect of this genocide with high levels of poverty, large populations of marginalized people, and a lack of importance placed on education. These impacts have led to a high risk of human trafficking in and around Phnom Penh. All of our projects in Cambodia target poverty and education to prevent at-risk women and children from being trafficked. We help support families through the provision of medical aid, food, and educational opportunities for their children. We also educate parents on the importance of education and the value of not sending their children to work at a young age.

Morocco:

Due to the cultural and religious influences, and the large socioeconomic gap in North Africa, many young women have few opportunities to establish a safe and independent life. In many cases the need to provide for themselves and their children leaves women vulnerable, and because Morocco is a central hub for trafficking trade routes between Africa, Europe, and the Middle East these vulnerable young women are easy targets. The transition homes that we partner with are the only homes of their kind in Morocco that provide support to at-risk young women. We partner with Dar Al Shifa, a home that has been operational since 2018 and provides support for girls that have aged out of the government foster care system, and, Dar Amal, opening in the summer of 2023 that will support young, unwed, pregnant women throughout their pregnancy and beyond.
